You are wrong. There is no log file for the ati driver. The screen jumps immediately to the 1400x1050 resolution.
I think we give up on this. Maybe you are the wrong person to bother in the first place. I should get acquainted to how X, gdm and Gnome interact. Maybe then I understand where the problem lies.
