Thank you for your reply and indeed that is exactly what happened.
I was using a startup disk on a USB stick and if I try to boot up now I 
am stuck at the following screen:

    error: file 'boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found
    Entering rescue mode...
    grub rescue>

Can you suggest a solution?
