Steps:
- installed linux-backports-modules-generic
- added options line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
Results:
- Operational: audio CD playback, digital sources, all controls available in
gnome ALSA mixer, headphone plug mutes internal speakers
- Not operational: internal & external microphones
- Not tested: line in, modem
