I had the same problem with kernel 4.8.0-42. Lubuntu 16.04 No network at all (eth and wifi), touchpad in my Acer E5-521-295T not working as well. Also a message about system error during one X session.
I have fixed it first by: apt-get remove linux-image-4.8.0-42-generic which switched ma to 4.8.0-41 which works OK. I have then installed again linux-image-4.8.0-42-generic with the same problem again.
