It looks like reverting commit 59ed4b6 requires several other commits get reverted, so it's probably not the best approach.
We know that this bug is fixes in Xenial. It's probably best to track down what commit fixes this in Xenial versus what commit broke this in Trusty. In comment 41, we found the 3.19 kernel is good, so we should test some earlier ones.
