I will publish this to Debian unstable as soon as the stretch freeze is over. Unfortunately, this problem existed for quite a while, so we would have to do _several_ SRUs to fix it in various Ubuntu releases (and in Debian stretch). But it's doable because the fix is very simple, so if anyone wants to drive this, please go ahead!
