I was using xterm when I got the above results.

However, just a few minutes ago, I ran another upgrade (apt-get dist-
upgrade) on the linux console, without any X running.  And I experienced
the problem once again.  It occured on the final package being installed
in this batch (xserver-xorg-video-intel), during the install phase,
prior to the conf phase.  I had to kill apt-get and run it again, and
the upgrade completed.  During the upgrade, and just a package or two
prior to the last one, I hit a key on the console to see if it was hung
up, and it echoed properly.  This latest batch included an update to
python-apt, but I don't know if that's relevant.
