This is not a bug in Pluma. This is a bug in the default system theme of Ubuntu MATE.
Look especially at those dark red and dark purple text on dark background. I dont understand how anyone can say with a good conscience that is easy to read. But I get it. I'll just have to recommend another distro to people as the defaults here are obviously not meant to be accessible.
