The difference between the 40second boot time and the 160second boot time 
appears with an additional
115second gap following:

  [   28.721183] EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
  [  123.772120] ...

which would point to a 115 second fsck (disk check) taking place.

Could you retest please.  If there is a definite interaction between
'usplash' running and an always-forced 'fsck', then that is something
that would need fixing;  however I cannot immediately see how that
connection would be possible.  Additionally, if a fsck is happening,
usplash should switch to the console automatically if any of the
watchdog timeouts are missed.
