Nish, I have just tried the ~ppa2 version with good success. I had trouble forcing the upgrade to ~ppa2 so wound up purging tomcat8 and reinstalling. I have confirmed the use of ~ppa2 with apt-show-versions | grep 'tomcat8'. All are showing ~ppa2.
