Possible workaround:

1) install network-manager-gnome (if you haven't already)
2) run nm-applet
3) use the Gnome network manager applet to configure your pptp VPN connection
4) close nm-applet and restart knetworkmanager

If you don't have the VPN connection showing up in knetworkmanager by
then, go ahead and try a reboot. I'm not exactly sure when the
connection showed up, but eventually it did and worked flawlessly so
far.
