It sounds like you are experiencing something related to my issue, but I
don't think it's exactly the same. For one thing, the actual volume does
change for me. It's just that it only will go up or down by 11% from
wherever the slider happened to be. And for another, the mute function
works perfectly for me. When I press the slider to mute it, it actually
mutes or un-mutes.

However, the fact that your slider only goes up or down by 11% would
definitely indicate that there's something going on. Is it possible that
this is a problem for all volume switches that are also meant to double
as mute buttons?

I'm feeling very sad that this has not gotten any attention. I would
dare to call it a very important issue simply because it's "little"
things like this that give first time users the impression that Linux
"isn't polished like Windows or Mac" or saddening thoughts like that. In
fact, this is exactly the kind of thing that gives that kind of
unfortunate, damning first impression. Probably a very easy fix, too.
Seems like somebody should be able to just compare the default audio
settings or keyboard configuration for Kubuntu and Ubuntu.
