I think Christian's suggestion of rebooting was for diagnostics of your reported bug to help us understand the root cause of the problem, rather than advice on how to fix the problem generally (we don't know the details yet). If it's a bug we can fix it, but if nobody affected helps us diagnose, then it will never be fixed.
Did you tell the system you were removing the drive before you unplugged it? If not you may be able to write a "1" to /sys/block/sdb/device/delete, but I'm not sure that works after the fact.
