Public bug reported:

Backintime was running a backup when the external hard drive it was
writing to was accidentally removed. Backintime then started to show a
continuous stream of error messages in small growl messages, which could
not be easily turned off or silenced. Even when I killed the Backintime
process and removed the crontab, I still received these messages. I had
to completely purge Backintime from my system to stop the messages. I
probably received several thousand of these before that time.

If an error occurs, I would suggest having a small Backintime error icon
to show on Gnome's main panel, which can then be clicked to see more
information. Showing thousands of growl messages, which can't be copy
and pasted or otherwise explained or acted upon, and which just sit
there obscuring the current window is insanely annoying.
