The command hdparm -b 255 turn off completely APM. This could last HD life by saving load cycles. On the other hand, the HD temperature could get very HOT (51°c on my Inspiron), also decreasing drive life.
I wonder if there is another better solution to this, for example using SMART functions with smartctl.
