To be fair, since 14.04 and including 16.04, my Brother MFC-J615W multi-
function printer works fine using Brother's device drivers.  They are
not as easy as they could be to install, but they work and all the
functionality except maybe fax (I never tried) it work.  Printing and
scanning work well.

And that model of printer is great because the ink cartridges do not
have any chips; they can be refilled easily and cheaply.
