For me it does not simply happen with compiz. It is happening on metacity, too. It happens every time after playing a video using xv- output, at least while dri is loaded (I did not test to disable dri). I don't need to have heavy 3d activity for this to occur.
Blacklisting the chips, though I am not a fan of compiz (I simply do not use it because I want to work with my machine, the only tool that compiz has and I miss in metacity is the scale-plugin), would result in many compaints of users who will say it used to work, but now it doesn't. Why not switching to i810?
