Just tested with mediainfo 0.7.82 in Ubuntu 16.04 amd64 with this command: mediainfo http://mediaarea.net/temp/a.mkv and I have a good result (starting with "Format: Matroska") with this (temporary) online Matroska file. Same result with mediainfo 0.7.85 in Ubuntu 16.10 beta.
