A few other quick tests: - When booting from the 11.10 ISO, 'ubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso', shutdown works correctly. - When booting from the 12.04 ISO, 'ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso', shutdown works only if no USB media are attached (not really surprising, since that's the same behaviour as when running 12.04 after installation).
