it appears as if the pulsaudio bluetooth discover module isn't loaded when you go straight to i3. this is strange because I've modified the pulseaduio startup scripts (per an askubuntu posting) to make sure that this module is started at pulseaudio start. The solution is to add the following to your .i3/config:
