Public bug reported: System is 14.04 LTS.
As a reminder, AMD fglrx drivers (formerly Catalyst) are deprecated on 16.04 LTS. The current suggested workaround for people who need fglrx drivers is "use 14.04 LTS". I have my system set to weekly updates. The most recent system update reverted my system back to the open source driver (xserver-xorg-video- ati). The update system still seems to identify fglrx as available. Fglrx and fglrx-updates both appear as options in the System > ... > Additional Drivers dialog. However selecting them and attempting to apply the change, the system will churn a bit then just reselect the open drivers option, without any dialog or error message. The open video drivers don't enable 3d hardware acceleration, which is unacceptable for my use case.
