@Pat I've rebooted the phone (3 times), activated SSH access (to read the syslog), opened the ProximityCheck app and played with it (press "Start", move the hand near the sensor, move the phone to my head as if I were taking a phone call, etc.). As explained earlier, the app turns orange to indicate the sensor in "NEAR" state, and never turns back to "UNKNOWN" or "FAR" again.
