I had to download and burn a new image from Ubuntu, because I had thrown out the original disk I used several months ago. I got the "ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso" from the regular download page. On the grub menu I selected the entry, "*Try Ubuntu without installing." I removed the quiet and splash keywords, and changed the entry "set gfxpayload=keep" to "gfxpayload=text". Ctrl+x did not work, so I pressed F10 to boot. Nothing at all. No output. After about 20 seconds the screen changed to an even darker black and a few seconds later I got the "no signal" message from the monitor.
I also tried booting without editing the command line, and the behavior was exactly the same. I also get the same behavior from the latest versions of Linux Mint Cinnamon and Peppermint Linux, which are based on Ubuntu 16.04. Just out of curiosity I'm going to see if I can download the current version of FreeBSD (which used to be my preferred *nix) and see if it will boot. At this point none of the other Linux distributions I've tried have worked. On Sat, Jul 9, 2016 at 7:25 AM, Christopher M.
