Ah, the problem was that I still had a locally installed flash player
sitting around from Feisty, in my ~/.mozilla/plugins/ directory.  I
cleared out that file and the nicely packaged flashplugin-nonfree worked
fine.  Although I bet there are going to be a lot of other Feisty users
who already followed the instructions to manually install flash on their
AMD64 systems, who won't remember to clear out the local install when
they upgrade to Gutsy...
