Unfortunately I flattened the machine to do a 16.04-only install. The disk in question had a working 14.04 version installed on it as well as an NTFS partition running Windows Visit and a third NTFS data partition. After trying to upgrade to 16.04 Ubuntu was unbootable. From a Live boot (USB thumb drive) gparted gave a "The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes, but Linux says it is 512 bytes." Warning.
After several unsuccessful attempts to reinstall 16.04 on top of the existing partition (choose during install) I gave up and flattened the drive and was able to install successfully. Apparently the problem/s originated during the original upgrade of the installed and working 14.04. Sorry the attached logs didn't provide more info.
