Further investigation with my Edgy Laptop shows, that the card
reader/card combination works there. The dmesg ouput when injecting the
card is:

[17180508.216000] SCSI device sdc: 498176 512-byte hdwr sectors (255 MB)

[17180508.220000] sdc: Write Protect is off

[17180508.220000] sdc: Mode Sense: 43 00 00 08

[17180508.220000] sdc: assuming drive cache: write through

and it seems the card is running through the usb_storage kernel module,
"sudo modprobe -r usb_storage" disables the creation of /dev/sdc.

NOW SOMETHING WEIRD HAPPENED
Just after testing the reader on my laptop I replugged it int o my workstation
and suddenly it is recognised and gets mounted as it should.

I will try this again after a reboot, but it seems this was all a false
alarm caused maybe by a weak physical connection.
