I run BOINC most of the time - it is the reason I run computers and one
of many reasons I don't run Windoze, which isn't a 24/7 operating
system.

I've got an XDreamer (8-core AMD running at 4.0ghz machine purveyed by
somebody in the mid-west, which came with a commercial installation of
Ubuntu on it - but the password didn't work, so it was taken to a
computer-repair shop with instructions to use the installation media
with it to get it running again - instead he ended up putting the latest
and greatest 'beta version' (free) of Ubuntu on it - I ran that for a
couple of years gradually watching Ubuntu go from v.12 to v.15, at which
point the ASUS (XDreamer's actual box is an ASUS gaming computer)
