I think it's a coincidence that Unity 8 was installed. I run Unity 7 on a laptop woh 3200x1800 using 1.88 scaling and I also see the problem from time to time. It seems there is a race condition during session start up and something in the gnome-settings pipeline is setting the Large Text option in System Settings.
