I have the same problem. The BIG bug is that thermald doesn't find thermal-conf.xml in /etc/thermald like it should... it looks for it in /var/run/thermald /therm-conf.xml... which of course doesn't exist. So any changes that you make in /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml aren't recognized.
The problem with the /dev/acpi_thermal_rel error, is that device doesn't exist. Further logs and info available on request.
