OpenVPN can be configured to enable users to connect to some other network without overriding the users default route, domain settings, etc. I have a setup in wich we enable access to some servers only via openvpn, but we don't wanna route all users traffic thought this network -- why on earth I would route the user's gmail through the servers network? But, with network-manager having done that, fire up Firefox and get a > server not found error.
