Here is an update. I took the latest distribution files down using apt-get dist-upgrade and now I set them and it pops up a box telling me I have to restart for changes to take effect. After a ctrl-alt-bkspace, I loose x again. Replaced xorg.conf with xorg.conf.1 and I am back at one screen again
