Public bug reported: running `ls -lha` on `/var/www` or `usr/share/nginx/` show that these folders (including the html folder) are for some reason owned by root user instead of `www-data` user as in previous ubuntu versions.
running `groups` shows the following output $ groups lewis adm cdrom sudo dip www-data plugdev lpadmin sambashare docker libvirtd So the www-data exists, it's simply not the owner for the `/var/www` or other relevant folders I'd also prefer the permissions to be 775 by default as without that, multi-user editing of www files is more prone to non-errors resulting from group permissions ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: nginx (not installed) ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-21.37-generic 4.4.6 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-21-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_uvm nvidia_modeset nvidia ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Sat Apr 23 09:15:44 2016 InstallationDate: Installed on 2016-03-29 (24 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS "Xenial Xerus" - Beta amd64 (20160323) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_GB:en PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=<set> LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: nginx UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: nginx (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug xenial -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573928 Title: nginx on xenial sets ownership for web-folder to root:root To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nginx/+bug/1573928/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
