As I really need this package, I now "apt-get --build source"d it and installed it using dpkg --force-conflicts -i. It worked just fine. So maybe it just needs to be rebuilt and assigned a new version number? Maybe it even works as is, I haven't tried using the binary package with GIMP 2.4.
