I had the problem that my computer stops responding when I used my D-Link DWL-G122. The kernel tried to load the rt73usb driver. My solution was to compile and install the CVS snapshot from http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/rt73-cvs-daily.tar.gz . After blacklisting rt73usb, I was able to access my WPA protected WLAN using the wlan0 interface (manual configuration). NetworkManager didn't work but I guess that's a different problem with an unrecognized IF name.
