After some research I started messing with NetworkManager and dbus. It
appears that one or both was semi-locked up or it's configuration
screwed up. Killing NetworkManager and restarting debus made my ethernet
interface selectable for about a minute. After that it was grayed out
and no longer selectable. Plugging and unplugging the network cable
several times would "wake up" network manager for another minute or so
and selecting the ethernet interface during this time seems to have
cleared up the problem. After a reboot and selecting several times
between ethernet and wireless interfaces the ethernet interface remains
usable. Before someone makes the comment, yes, my ethernet cable and
link were good and tested before this bug was opened.

I have no idea what the issue is/was here. Maybe someone can shed some
light on this for me. Over the next couple days I'll see if anything
similar happens again.
