Document viewer on the 2nd machine worked perfectly, and now works perfectly on
the first machine as well, also tried it with a alternate user ID.  I don't
know if the last round of updates fixed it indirectly, or what I was seeing was
related to the X.org driver issues I am now encountering on the first machine. 
I was able to open fresh .pdf files from a website so the bug looks to have
disappeared.  You might as well now close the issue - my apologies for taking
your time.
