Public bug reported: After upgrading from 15.10, xenial-sawfish stops with an error indicating that wallpaper can't be found. Turns out it is looking for wallpaper.jl or wallpaper.jlc. I searched for the file, installed it where it could find it, and that is currently my workaround.
I reported it as "returns to login prompt", because that's what would normally happen. I've seen sawfish crashes in the past, and I've recently figured out enough to maybe catch it in the act to make a sensible report about it. But since Xenial is so close that's not worth persuing. Those crashes (losing my x session) were so annoying that I have wrapped sawfish in a script that asks: really quit? before exiting the loop of restarting sawfish. So... somehow the wallpaper.jl is not being included the package.
