Thanks for the report! This is the intended functionality (only the
"slocate" group can read the database). Please check your install of
the "slocate" tool, it should have the correct permissions to allow for
it to run correctly:
$ ls -la $(which slocate)
-rwxr-sr-x 1 root slocate 35848 2007-10-02 12:00 /usr/bin/slocate*
** Changed in: slocate (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Incomplete
