William, perhaps you remember that for lyx 1.4.3 in feisty I had a
sponsored upload to disable assertions in lyx.

http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/universe/l/lyx/lyx_1.4.3-2ubuntu1/changelog

The related bug was

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lyx/+bug/82365

I don't want to reopen that bug, so I just comment here, since we're
talking of a new upload anyway.

You can read there motivations to disable assertions in lyx. After the
resync with debian for 1.5, my change has been reverted. If you really
are going to upload the new version, could you please disable assertions
again? The situation is unchanged, in particular:

- Assertions are still disabled by default by upstream, and enabled in debian.

- This is because these assertions are used for debugging purposes by
upstream. They are not meant as a production feature. Assertions are
still used extensively in lyx for these debug purposes, this leading to
slowdown. Try both versions and you'll see for yourself.

- The reason for enabling them in debian is that they believe this will
help debugging lyx. This is still not the policy followed in other
packages: by following that rule, willing to help debugging, we should
distribute debug versions of all our packages, slow them all, and let
them die for a wide range of minor problems

- Assertions still cause crashes when editing insets. While I should
report them, I also know by experience that this won't affect the
document at all, these are bugs related to rendering, and assertions are
affecting user experience here, while an user is not a beta tester.

- Finally, all these reasons, in the end, where considered valid to
revert debian change in 1.4.3 to what upstream does, i.e. disabling
assertions, and my upload was accepted. I ask you and everybody else who
uploads lyx to keep my change intact.

If you're not going for UVFe, since we are still in beta, I ask you to
just upload a package without assertions as a bugfix.
