switch to VT and then copy them onto a USB or mount some other hdd
partition.

I expect the kernel bug will still be there, but lightdm seems to handle
software fallback better, so you probably won't notice without checking
the logs.

ubiquity displays the "Try Ubuntu greeter", I asked for those before I
realised it was working. I think it also runs casper to set autologin
and other session customisations, so maybe useful in that sense.
