The freeplane that is not working on 16.04 was installed from the software resources via synaptic.
I have subsequently got freeplane up and running from the freeplane.sh provided in the .zip file from sourceforge. https://sourceforge.net/projects/freeplane/files/freeplane%20stable/ Nevertheless, we need to continue to discover why the install from the package resources did not work.
