You can ask the administrator of the university network at least. If you get full routing pushed by the endpoint, then you don't want to use your local DNS servers and even if you don't you probably get access to some intranet which probably requires other DNS settings, too.
I assigned this bug to n-m, because the patch needs to be applied there, not in the openvpn plugin and because n-m is a core package.
