It seems that this problem was actually related to firestarter.
Something in firestarter changed after the upgrade. I could see in
/var/log/syslog that there were dropped packets. When I uninstalled
firestarter and rebooted my connection worked.

However, packets are going out on the wireless interface when I use my
network even though the wired interface is up. It seems that packets are
actually going out on both interfaces!
