Confirmed! I am able to install this kernel and reboot my system correctly into Gnome.

Upon first reboot, VMWare resized my host OS window to 8000x3200. This happened with both 15.10 and 14.04. 15.10 had the latest Open VM Tools installed and 14.04 had NO version of Open VM Tools or proprietary VMWare Tools. It seems like this kernel build disregarded my previously set resolution.
