You are tying to install to a system that is already set up for EFI
mode.  You need to boot the install cd in EFI mode to do this.  You can
tell when you boot it in EFI mode because you get the plain grub boot
menu instead of the more pretty syslinux boot menu asking you what
language you want to use.

  Grub fails no matter where I tell it to install and after telling the
  insdtaller to skip installing gub, it crashes
