On a slow connection, an update might take hours. So I think keeping the
screen on during a manual update would be a bad idea for two reasons.

Firstly, leaving the screen on for hours would drain battery
unnecessarily.

Secondly, the device doesn’t lock until the screen turns off or sometime
afterward. So if downloading an update stopped the screen turning off,
it would also stop the screen from locking. That would mean you couldn’t
safely leave the device unattended while it was updating. You would have
to carry it around with you. And that, in turn, means that if it was
downloading over Wi-Fi, you personally would have to stay in range of
the Wi-Fi.
