Number of rewrites is exactly the same, since RewriteBase is prepended after the rewrite is done. It just replaces dirname of file with the one defined by a RewriteBase. And, if you check dirname of /usr/share/drupal5/index.php, it's /usr/share/drupal5, not /usr/share/drupal5/.
