My sound worked with one user but not with another. The reason was that
the user with no sound was added in the commandline: [adduser username]
then that user was added to the admin group [adduser username admin]

When I looked at the preferences for the user in the GUI, I needed to
tick a few boxes (among them the right to use sound).

(I also have nvidia ck804 sound, which is why I came to this bugreport before I 
realised I hadn't given the user rights to sound. When sound didn't work, 
clicking on the volume control popped up a window which said:
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This 
means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that 
you don't have a sound card configured.")
