** Description changed:

Tried to format a brand new Kingston 512 GB SDXC card
(http://www.kingston.com/en/flash/sd_cards) in ext4 using GParted, for
  storing user data on it.

The card can be formatted with no problems with MS Windows 8 (TM) with
the built-in formatter (exFAT). It can be written on completely in
  Windows with c't's h2testw (http://www.heise.de/download/h2testw.html)
with no errors, except some notice that due to some NTFS properties 1 MB
is reserved and therefore this MB cannot be written on.

However, when using GParted or KDE's partitionmanager or gnome-disk-
utility, formatting never comes to en end.

  Steps taken:

  1) Writing a GPT or MS-DOS partition table on the card (no obious problems).
  2) a) Creating partition using all the space shown as available OR
- 2) b) creating partition using everything except 10 MB.
+ 2) b) creating partition using everything except 10 MB. In both cases
choosing ext4.
  3) Starting 2) a) OR 2) b).

Result: The above-mentioned formatting tools lock up.

When I tried to lock format the first times last year, sometimes even
the whole system (including mouse) froze. This has not happened after
updating the kernel to Ubuntu 4.2.0-25.30-generic 4.2.6, so maybe it has
something to do with the kernel.

The machine is a DELL Latitude 3150 running Kubuntu 15.10.

Please tell me if you need any further information.
