Like you said, I suppose that's not a network-manager's bug or lack of feature, but a problem with the driver, since network-manager is reporting the quality/signal strenght correctly when using ndiswrapper with the same card... I didn't associate this bug report myself with network-manager when I submitted it. Someone else did...
